The Lama’s Son – Tradition und Moderne

„The Lama’s Son“ (2025) provides a glimpse into the tradition of the Tibetan Bön religion as practiced by many in Mustang in northern Nepal. The aging Lama in Lubra awaits his son’s return from the USA so that he can inherit the title … and fears the decline of his culture. We witness the slow transformation of traditions in the Mustang Valley through the experienced and steady camera eye of renowned director Kesang Tseten, himself of Nepalese descent and now living in Bern.

„The film is an attempt to capture this harsh region, its subsistence economy, and its fragile balance with nature in the face of modernity,“ summarizes Kesang Tseten.

In our rapidly globalizing world, the community struggles to preserve its customs. As remote as the region may be, even here — or perhaps especially here — traditions are particularly threatened, as many residents emigrate, even to New York, where the Lama’s son now works as a sushi chef and does not seem particularly eager to return. But he is the only one who can succeed his father. Will he answer his people’s call?
